How to Play Klotski

Klotski (Hua Rong Dao) is a sliding block puzzle in which blocks of different sizes are packed tightly into a tray. The goal of this block escape puzzle is to slide the largest 2×2 block down to the exit at the bottom by shuffling the other pieces out of its way. Blocks only slide into empty space — they never lift or rotate — and fewer moves makes for a better solution.

Strategy & Tips

• Keep the two empty squares next to each other — most useful maneuvers need a 1×2 gap to work with.
• Clear a vertical path down one side of the board before you try to move the big block.
• The classic Klotski puzzle is famously solvable in about 81 moves, so if you are well past 100, back up and rethink your route.

How do you solve Klotski? Open space beneath the large block by moving the small pieces toward the top, then walk it straight down the cleared column to the exit.
